MyProtein’s Impact Whey protein is the cheapest protein powder that we have selected of the three top options in our Size & Strength preferred options. Packing a massive 82g of protein per 100g this beats many of the other brands on the market. Let’s take a closer look into why and if it gives good value for money.

Protein Concentrate

If you didn’t know already, there are three main different types of protein which are used in protein powder supplements today; whey concentrate, whey isolate and hydrolyzed whey. MyProtein Impact Whey contains whey concentrate which is the cheapest and least processed form of whey. Consequently, it will most likely be the slowest to be absorbed by the body. Not a problem if you don’t need it immediately after a workout.

Because it is the least processed and rawest form of whey it means that it usually contains the most amount of lactose, carbohydrates, fats and cholesterol. People with a lactose intolerance or sensitive stomachs tend to avoid concentrates because of this reason – it can cause stomach upsets and bloating for them.

MyProtein Impact Whey

PhD Diet Whey

A cheap, no frills shake which delivers on quality and from a very reputable brand. You can’t go too far wrong with this one if you’re on a budget…

Advantages: Free from chemicals, high protein content, great brand

Disadvantages: Absorption rates are likely to be slower with this when compared to other types of protein due to primarily whey concentrate being used

Undenurated Whey

The MyProtein offering is undenurated which means that it has not been put through the same level of processing when compared to a whey isolate, for example. In addition, it has not been exposed to high levels of heat which is a critical point here. You’ll find that one set of people say that exposing the protein to high levels of heat to remove certain ingredients causes damage to the remaining nutrients in the protein. On the other hand you have the people who say that this is not true…It’s very difficult to know which is true for sure in all honesty.

MyProtein have decided to go down this marketing route in terms of selling undenurated whey because they clearly believe that it’s something they can sell. I think perhaps they are aiming it at the lower end of the market and think that by using this approach it will get more buyers and they will feel justified in buying the cheapest option.

Other Ingredients

The fact that it is from whey concentrate and not an isolate means that there will be more lactose in the protein powder. This may not cause a problem for many people but may be a consideration if you have any intolerance to lactose, which can be known to cause bloating in some.

There is no exact measurement out there to how much of each amino acid can be found within the protein but they say that there is an “excellent amino acid profile”. You can be assured that there is definitely some BCAAs present but just how much is not clear.

Conclusion

Overall, it’s a solid product which will do as it says on the tin – giving you a good quality protein at an affordable price. It packs such a high level of protein that you cannot ignore this one. If it’s high protein content you are looking for and a more natural, less processed protein powder then this might be just your thing.

Ideally I would suggest using this as a snack replacement or at a time when you don’t need a quick hit of protein, such as immediately after a workout. The protein just isn’t going to be absorbed quickly enough to do the job post workout. However, with a 25g serving costing just 30p and containing fewer than 100 calories it would be great as a snack to prevent you hitting the biscuit tin!
