MyProtein Recovery XS

MyProtein Recovey XS

A great, affordable protein shake from a reputable brand. Low in lactose, high in electrolytes, whey isolate and carbohydrates to speed up your recovery…

Advantages: Cheap, does exactly what it says on the tin

Disadvantages: No frills, but it contains the ingredients that you need post strenuous workout

The Protein

MyProtein Recovery XS contains protein derived from milk whey protein isolate, so you can rest assured that the quality of the protein is of a higher quality than a concentrate and that it has been filtered more intensively than your standard whey concentrate, further reducing the lactose, carbohydrate and fat content. However, at what temperature the whey has been filtered at is not known. This means that the filtration method could potentially damage the whey.

Carbohydrate Replenishing

It’s important to not only get a good source of protein but to mix that with a generous helping of carbohydrates after a hard training session. The reason for this is because you need to replenish the glucose (usable energy) and glycogen (stored energy) from the muscles that was burned during the training session as quickly as possible. It’s also thought that the added carbohydrate increases the speed at which the protein is transported to the muscles, thereby improving recovery time and supplying the muscles with what they need.

The carbohydrate used in MyProtein Recovery XS is from Waxy Maize Starch (WMS), which is believed to be absorbed more quickly through the stomach when compared to other sources of carbohydrate and is free from sugar and lactose, thereby reducing the risk of bloating and stomach upsets.

However, further research has found contradictory evidence about the effectiveness of WMS. It’s a minefield of misinformation and marketing hype out there so who actually knows the truth?! Not even the scientists can agree. What we do know is that you need a decent amount of carbs post workout and this does have them. The rate at which they will be delivered to your muscles is up for debate, and arguably a dextrose or maltodextrin source of carbohydrates will be just as effective.

Added Ingredients

Added into the mix to help speed-up recovery is a generous serving of essential amino acids and electrolytes to replace those essential nutrients lost during intense exercise when you sweat. They are called essential amino acids because you can only get them from your diet – the body is unable to biosynthesize (create) them itself. Ideally you would be getting them all from a clean and balanced diet, most of them being found in meats. However, as you train harder and use more of them for repairing and building muscle you must also increase your intake of them. This is not always possible through diet alone so adding some with your protein supplement is a convenient way to hit your amino acid quota.

L-Leucine has been added, which is definitely a good addition. This amino acid is thought to be one of the most important ones for stimulating muscle growth, which I wrote about the leucine trigger in another post.

L-Glutamine is another addition. Being the most abundant amino acid in the body means that you need to keep it topped up. Workout out at high intensities does use more glutamine and you don’t have reserves of it like you do fat so topping up again from your diet is critical.

Unlike fats, carbohydrates and proteins, amino acids are not stored in the body for use at a later date. You must maintain a healthy balance of the required amino acids, of which there are 20.

Mix-ability & Taste

I tend to find with a lot of the protein shakes which contain higher levels of carbohydrates, like maltodextrin and waxy maize starch, that they don’t mix so well. There are usually lumps of powder still inside the mixed solution, and this shake is no different. Using my normal approach to mixing it up, where I add about 300ml of water and mix in a protein shaker by hand, I found small lumps were left.

When I came to taste it I had just finished a punishing workout of weights and some time on the punchbag. As I knocked back the shake, expecting a refreshing, cold mixture to hit the back of my throat, I was not met with anything pleasant…It tasted pretty bad. I found it was way too overpowering and made me feel slightly nauseous. Straight after a workout it was way too much, but I battled through and finished it off.

Conclusion

Overall, this is a great protein shake for rapid recovery and I’d recommend trying it out to see how you like it. Ideally suited to those who are very active and looking for quick recovery rather than a gain in size and strength in my opinion, mainly because there is a lot of carbohydrate compared to protein.

The whey protein isolate, added amino acids and cost are what make this protein shake great. The mix-ability and taste are the only factors bringing this protein powder down in value, really. If you can get over the taste you are getting a great value performance protein powder for your money.
